Ginger and turmeric growing at home
Already last year I planted ginger at home and that went quite well. The tuber at the end of the year motivated me to plant even more this year and also to try with turmeric. Here you can see the one tuber that I was able to harvest at the end of summer. The wooden piece on the right is the original tuber.
So this year I went back to the supermarket in January, got me a ginger tuber (rhizom) with as many eyes as possible (shooting buds). A pack of turmeric tubers (rhizomes).
I then cut the ginger into pieces with at least about 3 eyes per piece. Allow the interfaces to dry for one day and then place the pieces in a vessel with wet household paier.

The whole is covered with freshness film and placed in a warm place. The window sill above the heating is suitable for this.
So do the turmeric tubers. But do not divide them. I have used from the pack the smaller ones for growing and the large ones I use in the kitchen :

After about 2-3 weeks, the rhizomes have expelled. The turmeric has tended to last longer than the ginger. Also, the turmeric rhizomes liked it rather less wet than the ginger.
About a week after they started expelling, I transferred them into pots of breeding soil. Planted flat and not buried too deep in the earth.
The whole again covered with freshness wrap to keep the earth moist and placed on the windowsill.
As soon as the shoots have started to grow high, I made a hole for them in the slide so that they can grow unobstructed, but at the same time the substrate is still nicely moist.
At the beginning of March, beautiful plants have already developed. The thin tall ones are the ginger, the ones with the larger leaves are the turmeric plants.

At the end of March, the plants were now potted into larger pots. In these they have to wait until after the last Ice Saints in mid-May on the windowsill. Then they come into the garden in even larger pots, to a sunny place.

How it goes on with them and how this year’s harvest then I will report in a later post 🙂
